Back to School

There was a little nip in the air on the way to Sunday coffee…reminding me it’s time to think about snow.  Whoa.  Slow down big guy!

It is time for the kids to go back to school.

It’s hardly a surprise.  I think Staples and Target were advertising back to school before the school year ended.

August is always back to school prep time.  Making sure everyone has clothing (thank goodness for outlet malls near vacation places) and school supplies (where do all those crayons go?)  Sports practices are often underway (officially, the “school” practices haven’t started, but the “Captain’s Practices” are in full swing.)

It is a bittersweet time for me.  While going to school is the child’s “job,” summers often seem some of the best “kid” times.  Schedules are looser, and there is no homework, or projects (projects are a teacher’s way to keep parents engaged.)

So as sure as the days are getting shorter, the focus on getting the kids back into a school frame of mind (including adjusting sleep times) becomes paramount as September approaches.

(By the way, I am writing this with a Northern perspective. Some schools in the south are already back in session.  It’s my view there ought to be laws prohibiting opening school before Labor Day.)

How does your family prepare for back to school?
